Bone SA was incorporated under section 21 (not for gain) in 1994 and has been actively involved in the processing and distribution of human allograft bone and related soft tissues since its inception.

Bone SA was registered in 1994 under Section 21 of the Companies Act no 61 of 1973 as an Association Incorporated not for Gain. The Memorandum of Association of Bone SA stipulates that this Association has as its primary objective:

The promotion of the interests of people disabled by disease or injury, through the processing and distribution of bone related products.
Bone SA is registered by the South African Revenue Services as a Public Benefit Organisation in terms of section 30 of the Income Tax Act.

Human bone and tissue donations are precious gifts that are generously given by donors or donor families. It is given with the intention of reaching out to other human beings and hopefully to help relieve their suffering that resulted from disease or injury. Bone SA’s employees, directors and associates have been serving the South African Community for the past thirteen years, by connecting bone tissue donors with recipients in conformance with our founding statements. This Association has over the years invented several new protocols and products, resulting in innovative patents and design registrations.

We view this as a way of applying our expertise and resources out of a deep respect for the benevolent intentions of donors. The intended outcome is to benefit and to best serve the needs of our main beneficiaries, the recipients of allograft bone and related soft tissues.

Centre for Tissue Engineering was established in 2002, following a Project Proposal made by Bone SA to the Tshwane University of Technology. The intention was to promote and expand the initiative of tissue donation and transplantation in South Africa, through deferential procurement and responsible processing of donated allograft tissues.

Bone SA has over the many years of its existence, sponsored interorganizational collaborative research projects as well as expert teaching staff for the benefit of students wishing to undertake undergraduate as well as postgraduate studies towards obtaining degrees in the field of Tissue Engineering.

We believe this concept of tissue transfer to be a unique example of our common humanity, overriding cultural, ethnic and personal differences.
